What should you know about a device to reduce snoring?

Short answer

A device may reduce snoring by keeping the airway open, but the right choice depends on its cause and whether sleep apnoea is present.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How these devices work

Some mouthpieces move the lower jaw or tongue forward to create more space behind the throat. Nasal dilators or strips can widen the nasal passage when congestion contributes. A device cannot correct every cause of snoring, and a poorly fitted mouthpiece may cause jaw discomfort, tooth movement, or a dry mouth.

Loud snoring with pauses in breathing, choking or gasping during sleep, morning headaches, or marked daytime sleepiness can occur with obstructive sleep apnoea. Snoring is a common presentation of obstructive sleep apnoea, but snoring alone does not establish that diagnosis.

Practical next steps

Note when snoring occurs, whether you sleep on your back, and whether someone notices breathing pauses. Treat nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis if a clinician recommends it. Side sleeping, avoiding alcohol near bedtime, and addressing weight-related airway narrowing may also help. Ask a dentist or sleep clinician about a fitted oral appliance rather than buying an unreviewed device.

When to arrange medical care

Arrange an assessment if snoring is persistent, disrupts sleep, or comes with witnessed pauses, gasping, morning headaches, or daytime sleepiness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain, or blue lips. A clinician may examine your nose and throat and consider a sleep study.

Questions for your doctor

Could my snoring reflect obstructive sleep apnoea? Which device suits my teeth, jaw, and nasal symptoms? Do I need a sleep study before using it? How will we check whether it is helping?

Questions people ask

Can a snoring device treat sleep apnoea?

Some prescribed oral appliances help selected adults, but sleep apnoea needs assessment and follow-up rather than self-treatment alone.

Can I use a mouthpiece without an assessment?

A clinician or dentist should check fit, jaw health, teeth, and the possibility of sleep apnoea first.
