How to reduce puffiness under the eyes

Short answer
To reduce under-eye puffiness, address sleep, salt, allergies, and irritation while watching for one-sided swelling or breathing symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cool compress
- May temporarily ease mild swelling and irritation
- Avoid
- Rubbing the eyes and unprescribed medicated creams near them
Why the area may look swollen
The thin skin around the eyes can show fluid retention after poor sleep, crying, a salty meal, or lying flat. Seasonal allergy symptoms may add itching, watering, and rubbing. Puffiness can also be part of facial structure and become more noticeable with age. Sudden swelling with raised itchy areas can occur with hives or angioedema. Redness, warmth, tenderness, and spreading swelling raise a different concern, such as cellulitis.
What you can try
Use a cool, clean compress for a short period and avoid rubbing or pressing the eyelids. Sleep with your head slightly raised if morning swelling is the main pattern, drink normally, and moderate salty foods. If itching and sneezing accompany the puffiness, ask a pharmacist or clinician about an appropriate allergy treatment. Stop any new eye cream or cosmetic that stings, and do not put steroid or other medicated cream close to the eyes unless prescribed.
When to get medical help
Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Arrange prompt assessment for painful redness, warmth, fever, reduced vision, eye movement pain, or swelling that is clearly worse on one side. A clinician should also review persistent or recurrent puffiness when there is no obvious trigger, particularly if other body swelling or new medicines are involved.
Useful questions
Could allergies, a product reaction, or fluid retention explain my pattern? Are my eye symptoms consistent with hives or angioedema? What can I use safely near the eyelids? Which warning signs mean I should seek same-day care?
