Red Stretch Marks in Pregnancy: What to Know

Short answer
Red stretch marks during pregnancy are common skin changes caused by stretching and hormonal influences, and they often become less noticeable after pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common areas
- Abdomen, breasts, hips and thighs
- Early appearance
- Red, pink, purple or reddish-brown lines
- Over time
- Colour often softens after pregnancy
What red stretch marks mean
Stretch marks, also called striae, form when the deeper layers of skin are stretched as the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs or other areas change. Early marks may be red, pink, purple or reddish-brown because newly formed skin changes are more visible through the surface. Mild itching or tightness can occur as the skin expands. Their colour commonly softens over time, although the lines may remain visible. Red marks do not by themselves signal a problem with the pregnancy or a skin infection.
Creams and oils can reduce dryness and make itching more comfortable, but they cannot reliably prevent or remove stretch marks. Avoid starting prescription retinoid products during pregnancy unless your maternity or dermatology clinician specifically advises you otherwise.
What you can do
Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing, pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it, and choose breathable clothing if the area feels irritated. Keep nails short and use a cool compress for brief periods if itching is distracting. Aim for steady, pregnancy-appropriate nutrition and follow your maternity team’s guidance about weight changes; do not attempt restrictive dieting to prevent marks.
If the marks still bother you after pregnancy, a dermatologist can assess their colour, texture and timing before discussing cosmetic options. Treatments such as Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling or Carboxytherapy may be considered in selected situations. Treatment choice depends on skin tone, whether you are breastfeeding, the mark’s maturity and the risk of temporary colour changes. These procedures are not generally something to begin during pregnancy without specialist advice.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity clinician or dermatologist if itching is severe, widespread, keeps you awake, or comes with a new rash, raised bumps, blisters, yellowing of the skin or dark urine. Pregnancy-related liver conditions can cause intense itching and need medical assessment, especially when the palms or soles are affected. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening symptoms or feeling unwell. A clinician can distinguish ordinary stretch-mark discomfort from another pregnancy skin condition.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the colour and location fit stretch marks, which moisturisers are suitable for your pregnancy, and whether any product you already use should be stopped. If you are considering a procedure later, ask when it is appropriate to schedule, how breastfeeding affects the plan, and what temporary redness or pigment changes may occur.

Questions people ask
Do red stretch marks go away after pregnancy?
They often become lighter and less noticeable as the skin settles, but some lines may remain. A dermatologist can discuss options for persistent colour or texture changes after pregnancy.
Can I treat red stretch marks while pregnant?
Focus on comfort with a gentle moisturiser and avoid self-starting prescription retinoids. Discuss any procedure or active treatment with your maternity clinician and dermatologist first.
