Red spots on the soft palate: what they may mean

The soft palate is delicate and can become red after hot food or drink, sharp food, vigorous brushing or repeated coughing. A sore throat, fever, fatigue or spots elsewhere in the mouth can point toward an infection. A single painful area may be an ulcer or local injury. Redness with easy bleeding, a lump, or a patch that persists needs direct examination because mouth lesions have several possible causes.

Choose cool or lukewarm drinks and soft foods while the area is sensitive. Avoid smoking, alcohol-based mouth rinses, very spicy foods and anything that scrapes the palate. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and keep hydrated. Do not scrape the spots or apply household chemicals. Note their number, location, pain, fever and any recent dental work or new medication.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, rapidly increasing swelling, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Arrange prompt medical or dental care for high fever, dehydration, severe pain, repeated bleeding, or a lesion that does not settle. A clinician may inspect the mouth, throat and nearby glands to decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
