Red spots on skin after sun exposure: what to know

Sunlight can warm the skin, increase flushing and irritate a weakened skin barrier. Redness that feels hot or stings may follow exposure or a new sunscreen. Small raised spots around hairs can fit follicle irritation, while recurring central-face flushing may fit rosacea. Acne can also become more noticeable when sweat, oil and occlusive products collect on the skin. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Move into shade, cool the skin with a clean damp cloth and pause fragranced or exfoliating products until it settles. Wash gently, avoid picking, and use loose clothing on covered areas. Choose broad-spectrum sunscreen suited to sensitive skin and reapply as directed on its label; a hat and shade add protection. Record when the spots started, where they occur, and whether they fade away from sunlight.

Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, blistering over a large area, faintness, or severe pain. Arrange a prompt dermatology review if spots spread quickly, involve the eyes or mouth, ooze, become increasingly tender, or do not begin settling after avoiding the trigger. A clinician can distinguish sun irritation from rosacea, folliculitis or another rash.
