What should you know about red spots on skin from sun?

Sun can cause flushing, warmth, and irritation on exposed skin. Sweat, sunscreen, heat, and friction may also block or inflame follicles, creating pimple-like spots. A rash that appears after a product or medicine can have a different cause. Acne, Folliculitis, Perioral Dermatitis, and Rosacea may all produce facial red bumps, while the timing and distribution provide useful clues. A visual examination is needed to separate these possibilities.

Limit further sun while the skin is red, use shade and protective clothing, and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen that your skin tolerates. Cool compresses and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser may reduce discomfort. Avoid scrubbing, picking, fragranced products, and strong active ingredients until the skin settles. Record the exposure, products used, and how long the spots last; this helps a clinician identify a trigger. LED Light Therapy should only be considered after a suitable diagnosis.

Arrange an assessment if spots last beyond the expected irritation period, recur after modest exposure, form blisters, crust, open sores, or bleed, or occur with a changing mole.
