Red spots on the breast: what to check

Spots on the chest or breast skin can occur where sweat, friction, tight bras, shaving, or fragranced products irritate follicles. Acne and folliculitis may create red, raised bumps; contact dermatitis may form a broader patch with dryness or scaling. Changes around the nipple or areola need separate attention because that skin has different structures and symptoms.

Notice whether the area is warm, tender, swollen, crusted, blistered, or leaking fluid. Also note a new lump, nipple inversion, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or a change affecting one breast. These findings do not identify a diagnosis by themselves, but they are reasons for an examination.

Wash gently, dry the skin carefully, wear a clean supportive bra that does not rub, and stop newly introduced fragranced products. Avoid squeezing bumps or applying harsh exfoliants. If breastfeeding, mention that to the clinician and seek advice for pain, nipple damage, or a hot swollen area; do not delay review while trying repeated home remedies.

Arrange a medical review for a spot or rash that persists, recurs, spreads, bleeds, or changes the nipple or areola. Seek prompt care for rapid breast redness, warmth, swelling, fever, severe pain, pus, or feeling unwell. A new lump, bloody discharge, skin dimpling, or persistent one-sided change should be assessed by a qualified clinician.

Ask whether the appearance fits irritation, acne, folliculitis, infection, or another breast skin condition; whether you need breast examination or imaging; which products are safe; and what change should bring you back sooner.
