Red spot spreading on skin

Redness can expand when the skin is reacting to an irritant, allergen, heat, or sun exposure. It can also accompany conditions such as contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, rosacea, or sunburn. Cellulitis is an infection of deeper skin and may cause an area that is hot, painful, swollen, and progressively enlarging. The pattern and associated symptoms matter; the red area alone cannot establish the cause.

Mark the outer edge gently with a pen and note the time, so changes are easier to judge. Remove any new product, jewellery, adhesive, or plant exposure, and rinse the skin if an irritant may be present. Keep the area cool, avoid scratching, and do not massage it. Arrange same-day medical advice when expansion is noticeable, particularly if the area is warm or painful.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked warmth, swelling, pus, fever, chills, red streaks, facial or eye involvement, or feeling faint or very unwell. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, confusion, or a rapidly developing widespread reaction. A clinician may need to distinguish infection from inflammation and choose treatment accordingly.
