What should you know about red purple stretch marks?

Short answer

Red or purple stretch marks are early striae formed by stretching of the skin, and their colour may fade over time while the lines remain visible.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why they appear

Stretch marks can develop during pregnancy, growth, muscle or weight changes, or when skin is exposed to corticosteroids. They often begin as red, pink, or purple lines and may feel slightly itchy. With time, they can become lighter and less inflamed in appearance. They are not caused by poor hygiene and are not contagious.

Sudden, extensive marks without an obvious change in the skin or body should be assessed, especially if there are other symptoms or a history of steroid use. A clinician can distinguish stretch marks from bruising, scars, or another rash.

What you can do

Moisturiser can ease dryness or itch, but it does not reliably remove established stretch marks. Avoid scratching and use sun protection, because tanning can make the colour contrast more noticeable. If the marks are a cosmetic concern, a dermatologist can discuss options such as microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling, or carboxytherapy.

These procedures work differently and may require a course of appointments. Suitability depends on skin tone, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, the marks’ age and texture, and the risk of pigment changes. Ask about healing time and aftercare before treatment.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if marks appear suddenly without a clear explanation, cover broad areas, bruise easily, or occur with weakness, swelling, unusual pain, or other body changes. Seek care for skin that is painful, warm, broken, or showing signs of infection.

Questions for your doctor

Are these stretch marks or another type of skin change? Which option fits my skin and the marks’ stage, what pigment changes are possible, and how should I plan treatment around pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Questions people ask

Do red stretch marks mean the skin is infected?

No. Early stretch marks are a type of skin stretching and are not contagious; infection would be suggested by warmth, increasing pain, pus, or fever.

Can treatment erase stretch marks?

Treatments may soften colour or texture, but results vary and the marks may remain visible. A dermatologist can explain realistic options.
