What should you know about red pimples on upper arms?

Bumps spread across the outer upper arms and feel dry or rough may reflect keratin collecting around follicles. Spots that are centred on hairs, itchy, or tender can occur with folliculitis, especially after heat, sweating, friction, or hair removal. Acne is more likely to include mixed lesions such as clogged pores and inflamed pimples, sometimes extending to the chest or back. Similar bumps can also be caused by irritation, so a diagnosis should not be based on location alone.

Wash with a mild cleanser and moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp. Avoid rough exfoliating gloves, picking, tight sleeves, and fragranced products that sting. If the area is exposed to sweat or rubbing, rinse soon afterwards and change clothing. A gentle exfoliating moisturiser may help roughness, but use it cautiously and stop if irritation develops. A dermatologist can match treatment to the actual cause.

Book an assessment if bumps persist, recur, itch intensely, scar, or fail to settle with gentle care. Seek prompt attention when skin becomes hot, increasingly painful, swollen, pus-filled, or rapidly red. Fever or feeling unwell alongside the eruption also needs medical review.
