What should you know about red pimples after shaving?

A bump centred on a hair and appearing soon after shaving may reflect friction, a close shave, or a hair curling back into the skin. Itching and small uniform bumps can fit folliculitis; tender spots with trapped hairs can fit razor bumps. Acne can also affect shaved areas, particularly where oil, sweat, or occlusive products collect. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Pause shaving the affected area until the skin settles. Wash gently with lukewarm water, avoid scrubbing and picking, and use a clean razor with shaving gel when you resume. Shave in the direction of hair growth with light strokes, then rinse and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser. Do not share razors. A clinician can suggest a suitable acne or follicle treatment if bumps recur.

Arrange medical advice if redness spreads, pain or warmth increases, pus develops, fever appears, or the area becomes swollen. Seek prompt assessment for rapidly worsening skin changes or severe tenderness. Repeated flares, dark marks, or bumps that do not improve after stopping irritation also deserve review.
