What should you know about red penile skin?

Friction, sweating, a new soap, lubricant, condom material, or topical product can irritate sensitive skin. Itching or scaling can occur with contact dermatitis, while warmth, swelling, tenderness, or spreading redness needs assessment for cellulitis. Moisture in skin folds may contribute to heat rash. A clinician may also consider psoriasis or another inflammatory condition. Redness after intense sun exposure can affect exposed skin, but the penis should not be exposed deliberately.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and avoid fragranced products or vigorous rubbing. Pause sexual activity if it worsens discomfort, and do not apply steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams unless a clinician recommends one. Wear loose, breathable underwear and note when the redness began, what touched the area, and whether there is discharge, sores, burning, or urinary change. A sexual-health clinician can assess possible infections when relevant.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, feeling very unwell, inability to urinate, or a darkening or blistering area. Arrange prompt medical review for discharge, ulcers, blisters, bleeding, a new lump, or redness that persists after irritants are stopped.
