Red nodular melanoma: why prompt assessment matters

Nodular melanoma often forms a firm, raised lesion rather than a flat patch. It may be red, pink, brown, black, or a mixture of colours, and it can ulcerate, crust, itch, or bleed. Growth over a short period is a key warning sign, but appearance alone cannot confirm melanoma. A dermatologist usually examines the lesion with magnification and arranges a biopsy or complete removal so a laboratory can identify the cells and guide staging.

Do not cut, burn, or repeatedly traumatise a suspicious lump. Arrange a prompt dermatology appointment and bring photographs showing when it first appeared and how it changed. If melanoma is confirmed, care may include Surgical Excision or Skin Cancer Surgery to remove the lesion with an appropriate margin. Some people need Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for staging. Further treatment can involve Tumour Removal Surgery, Immunotherapy, or structured Follow-Up After Cancer Treatment, depending on the pathology and staging.

Seek prompt specialist review for a new or changing red lump, especially when it grows quickly, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or fails to heal. Urgent help is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding, severe illness, new weakness, confusion, seizures, or a severe headache. Brain Metastases are a possible complication of advanced cancer, but neurological symptoms have many causes and need urgent evaluation rather than assumptions.
