Red Lump on the Neck: What to Know

A surface lump with redness may be a boil, inflamed cyst, irritated hair follicle, bite, or other skin problem. A deeper lump can be a lymph node reacting to infection in the throat, teeth, ears, or skin. A neck mass is also a possible presentation of Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, or Cancer of Unknown Primary, but the appearance alone cannot distinguish these causes.

Pain and warmth often accompany inflammation, while a firm, fixed, growing, or persistent lump deserves a careful examination even without pain. Tell the clinician about recent infections, dental work, smoking, voice change, swallowing difficulty, night sweats, or unexplained weight change.

Book an appointment if the lump remains, enlarges, feels hard, returns after treatment, or has no obvious explanation. Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or applying strong creams without advice. Note its position and changes, and take a clear photograph in good light.

A clinician may inspect the skin and mouth, feel the thyroid and lymph nodes, and examine the throat. Ultrasound or other imaging, blood tests, or a tissue sample may be recommended according to the findings. Thyroid-related findings can sometimes lead to discussion of Thyroid Removal Surgery, but surgery is not assumed from a red lump alone.

Get urgent care for fast-spreading redness, rapidly increasing swelling, fever with severe pain, pus, neck stiffness, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Emergency assessment is also needed for swelling of the face or tongue, faintness, or confusion.
