Red Light for Perioral Dermatitis: What to Know

Perioral dermatitis causes small inflamed bumps, scaling, or burning around the mouth, nose, or eyes. Red-light devices use visible light rather than ultraviolet light, but evidence for treating this condition is limited and device settings vary. Light may also create warmth or irritation, which can aggravate sensitive facial skin. A rash around the mouth can resemble acne, contact dermatitis, or another condition, so identifying the cause matters before adding a home treatment.

Pause new cosmetics, fragranced products, scrubs, and exfoliating acids while the skin is unsettled. Wash gently with lukewarm water and use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser if it does not sting. Do not start or continue a topical corticosteroid on the face without medical guidance; stopping or changing it may need a planned approach. A clinician may consider topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics when the diagnosis and severity support them. Take a photo of the rash and note products, medicines, and device exposure before your appointment.

Arrange a dermatology review if the rash persists, spreads toward the eyes, repeatedly returns, or is not settling after you remove suspected irritants. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, marked swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. These features can signal a different or additional problem that needs examination rather than light treatment.
