What should you know about red dot on skin?

A small red mark may follow friction, an insect bite, heat rash, sun exposure, or contact with a new product. Several dots with itch can occur in an inflammatory rash, while a warm, tender area that spreads may indicate cellulitis. Facial dots may sit within broader flushing associated with rosacea. A dot that does not fade when pressed, appears with unusual bruising, or is accompanied by feeling unwell should be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

Leave the area alone, wash gently, and avoid scratching or applying multiple new products. Protect exposed skin from sunlight and friction. Photograph the mark beside a familiar object and record when it appeared, whether it blanches with gentle pressure, and whether it becomes itchy, painful, raised, or larger. Do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without guidance. A clinician can examine the colour, surface, distribution, and surrounding skin.

Get urgent help if many new dots appear quickly, the marks do not fade with pressure and you feel unwell, or there is breathing difficulty, facial swelling, fever, or rapidly spreading warmth. Arrange review for a dot that persists, changes, bleeds, crusts, or repeatedly returns. Redness from contact dermatitis, psoriasis, sunburn, or heat rash can look different from a vascular mark, so a changing lesion should be checked.
