Red Bumps Under Skin: What They May Mean

A warm, painful area that expands can fit cellulitis and needs prompt medical assessment. Small clustered bumps after sweating may fit heat rash. Scaling or recurring plaques can occur with psoriasis, while flushing and visible facial redness may accompany rosacea. A new product, fabric, or chemical can trigger contact dermatitis. Recent strong sun exposure can cause sunburn, even when the skin feels tight more than itchy. These patterns do not establish a diagnosis by themselves.

Note when the bumps began, whether they feel firm, tender, hot, or fluid-filled, and whether they are changing. Wash gently, avoid squeezing or scrubbing, and pause any newly introduced skin product. Keep sweaty areas cool and dry, and protect exposed skin from further sun. Take a clear photograph in good light so changes can be compared. A clinician can examine the skin and decide whether treatment is needed; options may differ for irritation, inflammation, or infection.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, marked warmth, fever, facial or eye swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rash with blistering or skin peeling. Arrange a medical review if a lump persists, repeatedly returns, becomes increasingly tender, or does not settle after avoiding an obvious irritant. Prompt assessment is especially sensible when redness follows a wound, bite, injection, or procedure.

Ask what features point toward infection or dermatitis, whether any medicine or product could be contributing, and what changes should trigger an earlier review. Mention allergies, recent travel, new exposures, fever, and every cream or tablet you have tried.
