What should you know about red bleeding after sex?

Bleeding after sex can follow friction, dryness, a small surface tear, or inflammation. Infection such as [Chlamydia](/conditions/chlamydia/) may cause bleeding alongside discharge, pelvic discomfort, or pain when passing urine. Around and after menopause, thinner, drier tissues linked with [Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause](/conditions/genitourinary-syndrome-of-menopause/) can bleed more easily.

Changes on the cervix, including [Cervical Dysplasia](/conditions/cervical-dysplasia/), can present with bleeding after sex. [Cervical Cancer](/conditions/cervical-cancer/) and [Vaginal Cancer](/conditions/vaginal-cancer/) are less common explanations, but bleeding after sex is a reason to arrange an examination rather than assume the cause. The symptom does not identify the diagnosis by itself.

Book a GP or gynaecology appointment and note when the bleeding occurs, its colour and amount, whether it follows penetration every time, and any contraception or medicines. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, and check whether cervical screening is due. Avoid sex until severe pain or active bleeding has settled, and do not douche because it can irritate tissue.

If an infection is found, treatment for you and recent partners may be needed. Treatment for a cervical abnormality depends on the examination and test results; a cone biopsy is one procedure used in selected situations.

Seek urgent care for heavy or persistent bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or feeling seriously unwell. If pregnancy is possible, contact a clinician promptly. Arrange a timely review for repeated bleeding, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding with unusual discharge or pelvic pain.

Ask what areas need examination, whether infection testing or cervical screening is appropriate, and what symptoms should prompt urgent help. If an abnormal area is found, ask what it means, whether a biopsy is needed, and how results will guide treatment.
