Recurring stye in the same eye: what to know

A stye is a tender, localised swelling near an eyelash or eyelid gland. Oil, skin cells and bacteria can block the opening. Recurrence on one side may relate to eyelid inflammation, rubbing, cosmetics, contact lenses or glands that do not drain well. A painless lump that remains after tenderness fades may be a different blocked-gland swelling and should not be squeezed.

Apply a clean, comfortably warm compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it through the day, then gently massage toward the lashes if comfortable. Keep hands, towels and pillowcases clean. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye has settled, and do not pierce or squeeze the lump. A clinician can check the eyelid and advise treatment if episodes continue.

Arrange a GP consultation for repeated styes in the same place, a lump that does not resolve, or frequent eyelid irritation. Seek urgent help if redness or swelling spreads around the eye, vision changes, eye movement hurts, severe pain develops, or you feel acutely unwell. Marked discharge or widespread redness also needs assessment.
