What should you know about recurring alopecia areata?

Alopecia areata is an immune-related condition in which the body targets hair follicles, producing smooth bald patches. Hair may regrow and later fall out again, sometimes in a different area. The scalp is common, but eyebrows, eyelashes, or other hair-bearing areas can also be involved. The skin in a patch often looks normal rather than scaly or scarred. Recurring hair loss is a presentation of alopecia areata; it does not by itself establish the diagnosis, because other scalp and hair disorders can look similar.

Book review when a new patch appears, especially if its edge is expanding or several areas develop. Bring photographs that show the change over time and mention nail changes, itching, scaling, family history, or other health conditions. Treatment depends on age, extent, location, and previous response. Options may include steroid injection into the skin, topical corticosteroids, oral corticosteroid treatment, or JAK inhibitor treatment. Do not start or stop prescription therapy without discussing monitoring and side effects.

Seek prompt assessment for sudden extensive hair loss, loss of eyebrows or eyelashes, painful or scaly scalp, or signs of infection. A clinician should also review hair loss accompanied by fatigue, weight change, or other new symptoms, since these may point to a different or additional problem.

Ask how the diagnosis was reached, whether the scalp needs examination or testing, what regrowth to watch for, and how recurrence will be monitored. Ask which treatment fits the pattern and what precautions apply to pregnancy, medicines, or other conditions.
