What to know about rectal melanoma

Symptoms can include rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habit, pain, a feeling of incomplete emptying or a mass. These symptoms also have many non-cancer causes, so they do not establish a diagnosis by themselves. Examination and biopsy identify abnormal cells, while scans and other tests assess the local area, lymph nodes and distant organs. Rectal melanoma is managed as a cancer requiring coordination between colorectal, oncology, pathology and imaging teams.

Ask for a clear explanation of the biopsy result, stage and treatment aim. Depending on the findings, care may involve Surgical Excision, Skin Cancer Surgery or Tumour Removal Surgery, with the operation selected around tumour position, spread and bowel function. A Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy may help assess nearby lymphatic drainage in selected cases. Immunotherapy can be discussed when systemic treatment is appropriate. Arrange prompt medical review for rectal bleeding, a new lump, persistent pain, unexplained weight loss, worsening constipation or a sustained change in bowel habit. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, dizziness, fainting, severe abdominal pain or inability to pass stool or gas. If melanoma has spread, symptoms such as new severe headache, weakness, confusion or seizures require emergency assessment; Brain Metastases are one possible reason clinicians may investigate neurological symptoms.
