What should you know about the reason for a lump in the neck?

Neck lumps may be enlarged lymph nodes during or after an infection, thyroid nodules, salivary-gland changes, cysts, or other benign growths. They can also be a presentation of lymphoma, thyroid cancer, head and neck cancer, or cancer found in a lymph node when the original site is not yet known.

The location, size, texture, movement, duration, and associated symptoms help guide assessment. Trouble swallowing, a persistent sore throat, voice change, ear pain, unexplained weight loss, or a lump that continues to enlarge are useful details to report. A neck lump does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a persistent, growing, firm, or unexplained lump. The clinician may examine the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph-node areas, then recommend ultrasound, other imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample depending on the findings.

Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, as this can make it sore and harder to judge. Note when you first noticed it, whether it changes with illness, and any swallowing, breathing, dental, or voice symptoms.

Seek emergency help if the lump is associated with difficulty breathing, rapidly worsening swallowing, drooling, swelling of the tongue or face, or severe bleeding. Contact a clinician soon for a lump with persistent voice change, unexplained fever, night sweats, or progressive enlargement.

Where does the lump appear to arise from? Does it need ultrasound or a needle sample? Which symptoms would make the assessment more urgent? If a thyroid cause is suspected, what tests are needed before considering thyroid removal surgery?
