What should you know about rear flank pain?

Pain that changes with movement, lifting or pressing the area may reflect a muscle strain or back problem. Kidney Stones can cause intense pain that comes in waves and may move towards the groin, sometimes with nausea or blood in the urine. Kidney Infection may present with flank pain alongside fever, chills, feeling unwell or painful urination. A Urinary Tract Infection can cause burning, frequent urination or lower abdominal discomfort and may spread upwards if untreated. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Note when the pain began, whether it follows movement, and any urinary or digestive changes. Drink normally unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and avoid strenuous lifting until the cause is clearer. Use only pain relief that is suitable for your health and other medicines. Arrange a medical assessment if the pain persists, recurs, or comes with urinary symptoms; an examination and urine testing may be needed.

Seek urgent care for flank pain with fever and shaking chills, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, severe or rapidly worsening pain, or inability to pass urine. Get immediate help after a significant injury, or if pain occurs with weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Blood in the urine also warrants prompt clinical advice.

Ask whether the pattern suggests a muscle, stone or infection; whether urine testing or imaging is needed; which pain relief is safe; and which symptoms should bring you back urgently.
