What should you know about really dark orange urine?

A deep orange shade can appear when urine is concentrated after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea or limited drinking. Dehydration is more concerning when thirst, dry mouth, dizziness or reduced urination accompany the colour. Some medicines and supplements alter urine pigment. Orange-brown urine with yellow eyes, pale stools, itching or nausea can reflect bile entering urine during a liver or bile-flow problem. Colour by itself cannot tell which explanation applies, and orange urine does not diagnose Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B.

Check the label of any newly started medicine or supplement, and note whether the colour began after taking it. Sip normal fluids unless a clinician has restricted them; avoid rapidly drinking excessive water. Keep a brief record of the shade, timing, urine amount, recent heat exposure, exercise and other symptoms. If the colour does not settle or returns repeatedly, contact a clinician for an examination and possible urine and blood tests.

Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, repeated vomiting, severe pain, or fever with a marked change in urine. Arrange prompt medical review for yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, significant itching, swelling, or orange urine that persists despite normal hydration. Heat Exhaustion can cause fluid loss and needs prompt attention when symptoms are significant.

Ask whether a medicine, supplement, dehydration or liver-related pigment is the most plausible explanation. Ask if you need urine testing, blood tests, or review of liver symptoms, and what change in urine output should trigger urgent care.
