What should you know about really cracked heels?

Short answer
Really cracked heels need regular moisturising, gentle filing and medical review when they bleed, become infected or do not improve.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common feature
- Thick, dry skin splitting around the heel rim
- Helpful habit
- Apply a rich moisturiser after washing and before bed
- Avoid
- Cutting fissures with blades or sharp tools
What cracked heels can mean
Heel fissures form when thick, dry skin loses flexibility and splits under pressure. Open cracks may sting while walking and can catch on socks or bedding. Dry skin, long periods of standing, open-backed shoes and hot showers can all contribute. Athlete's Foot may also cause scaling or splitting, especially if itching or peeling affects the spaces between the toes. Cracked skin is not automatically a sign of infection, but warmth, swelling, drainage or spreading redness needs attention.
What you can do
Wash with lukewarm water, pat dry, then apply a thick emollient while the skin is still slightly damp. Cover the heels with cotton socks overnight. A foot file can gently smooth loose thickened skin after bathing; do not cut the cracks with blades or remove living skin. Choose closed, well-fitting shoes and avoid walking barefoot on hard floors. A clinician can recommend Emollient Therapy or check for fungal involvement when home care is not enough.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical care for a deep or bleeding fissure, pus, increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling or fever. Seek earlier assessment if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation or a weakened immune system, because a small foot wound may need closer monitoring. Book a dermatology appointment when repeated cracking continues despite consistent moisturising or when severe scaling affects both feet.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be Athlete's Foot or another skin condition? Which moisturiser and strength are suitable for my heels? Is the fissure deep enough to need a dressing or prescription treatment? How should I protect my feet if I have diabetes or reduced sensation?

Questions people ask
Why do heel cracks hurt?
The split can extend into sensitive living skin and opens further when the heel bears weight.
Can cracked heels heal at home?
Mild cracks may settle with consistent moisturising and protection, but deep, bleeding or infected cracks need clinical assessment.
