What should you know about really cloudy urine?

A single cloudy urine sample may follow not drinking enough, strenuous activity, or a change in urine chemistry. Persistent cloudiness, a strong unusual smell, pain, or changes in how often you urinate deserve more attention.

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated, when minerals form crystals, or when cells, mucus, or bacteria are present. A urinary tract infection often causes cloudy urine alongside burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. Cloudiness by itself does not show which cause is responsible.

Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back can indicate that an infection has reached the kidneys. If you have vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, or very dark urine, dehydration may also be contributing. Vaginal discharge or semen can mix with a urine sample and change its appearance.

Notice whether the cloudiness clears after drinking fluids normally and passing urine again. Do not force large amounts of water if you have been told to restrict fluids or have heart or kidney disease. Avoid using leftover antibiotics: the right treatment depends on the cause, and testing may be needed.

If the change continues, recurs, or comes with urinary symptoms, arrange a clinician visit. They may ask about medicines, periods, discharge, sexual health, and fluid intake, then test a urine sample. Mention pregnancy, diabetes, kidney disease, or a weakened immune system because these can affect the urgency of assessment.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy urine with fever or chills, pain in the back or side, repeated vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. These symptoms can signal a more serious infection or another problem needing prompt treatment.

Arrange prompt advice if you see blood, have significant pain, or are pregnant. Contact a clinician if cloudiness lasts beyond a brief episode or keeps returning, even when you feel otherwise well.
