Reactive rheumatoid arthritis: what to know

Reactive arthritis usually describes joint inflammation that develops after an infection elsewhere in the body. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease in which inflammation can persist and affect multiple joints. People sometimes use the terms interchangeably, but the distinction matters because the history, tests, and treatment plan may differ.

Joint pain, hand swelling, finger stiffness, and morning joint stiffness can occur with several disorders. A clinician will ask about recent stomach, urinary, or genital infection, eye symptoms, skin changes, bowel symptoms, and the distribution and duration of joint swelling. Tests can help exclude infection and other causes, but symptoms and examination remain central.

Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, several joints are involved, or pain is limiting walking, work, or sleep. Bring a list of recent illnesses, medicines, and symptoms outside the joints. Rest an acutely painful joint briefly, keep it gently moving within comfort, and follow prescribed treatment rather than taking leftover antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medicines without advice.

Management depends on the diagnosis and severity. Anti-Inflammatory Medication may help selected people, while persistent inflammatory symptoms may need specialist follow-up and a different long-term plan.

Seek urgent care for a hot swollen joint with fever, inability to move a joint, severe illness, painful red eyes or vision change, or new weakness. A joint infection and eye inflammation require prompt attention. Seek timely review if symptoms continue after an infection or repeatedly return.
