What should you know about rdw blood test high?

A high RDW can appear when the bloodstream contains a mixture of older cells and newly produced cells. Iron, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency are possible explanations, while inflammation, recent illness and some long-term conditions can also alter blood-cell production. The pattern is more useful than RDW alone: haemoglobin, cell volume and the rest of the full blood count help narrow the possibilities. A high result does not by itself prove anaemia or identify a serious disease.

Book a routine review if the result was unexpected, and take the entire report with you. Tell the clinician about diet, blood loss, menstrual periods, bowel symptoms, fatigue, recent fever and medicines. They may repeat the blood count or request iron studies, vitamin tests, kidney tests or other investigations. Avoid treating the number with supplements until the cause is clearer; excess supplementation can be unhelpful or harmful.

Seek prompt advice for breathlessness with ordinary activity, fainting, racing heartbeat, persistent fever, marked weakness or unexplained bleeding. Emergency care is appropriate for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, chest pain or confusion. A high RDW alone usually calls for explanation and follow-up rather than emergency action.
