Raw, burning skin around the anus

The skin may become raw after frequent wiping, diarrhoea, sweating, tight clothing, fragranced wipes, soaps, or contact with stool or topical products. Fissures, haemorrhoids, eczema, infection, and inflammatory conditions can also cause burning. Contact dermatitis may follow exposure to an irritant or allergen. Burning with grouped blisters or a one-sided band of pain can be a clue to [Shingles](/conditions/shingles/), which needs prompt assessment. Rinse with lukewarm water after bowel movements when possible, then pat dry. Avoid scrubbing, fragranced wipes, deodorants, and harsh soaps. Wear loose cotton underwear, change damp clothing, and keep nails short to reduce skin injury from scratching. A simple protective barrier may reduce contact with moisture, but stop any product that stings or worsens the rash. Do not insert creams or medicines into the anus unless a clinician has recommended them.

Arrange medical review for persistent burning, recurrent rawness, a new lump, discharge, a change in bowel habits, or pain with bowel movements. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, black stools, severe or rapidly increasing pain, fever, pus, spreading redness, or blisters near the eye or genitals. Ask whether the skin is irritated, cracked, infected, or affected by a fissure or haemorrhoid; which cleanser and barrier are suitable; and whether a medication, wipe, or bowel change could be contributing. Mention bleeding, blisters, discharge, constipation, diarrhoea, and recent products.
