What does a rattling cough mean?

A wet or rattling sound may happen when mucus sits in the throat or larger breathing tubes. A cold or acute bronchitis can do this, while wheeze may suggest narrowed airways such as asthma. Post-nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis and acid reflux can also trigger coughing without a chest infection. In children, bronchiolitis can cause noisy breathing; a cough that persists or repeatedly brings up phlegm needs assessment for causes such as bronchiectasis or chronic cough.

Drink fluids if you can, avoid tobacco smoke and strong fragrances, and rest. Humid air may feel soothing, but avoid burns from hot steam. Note when the cough began, whether phlegm is clear or coloured, and whether exercise, lying down, cold air, or allergens trigger it. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether testing or targeted treatment is needed; antibiotics are not suitable for every cough.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, chest pain, coughing blood, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Arrange prompt assessment if breathing is worsening, fever persists, you are unusually drowsy, or a child is struggling to feed. A cough lasting beyond the expected course, recurring frequently, or accompanied by weight loss or night sweats also warrants review.

Ask whether the sound suggests mucus, wheeze, reflux, or infection; whether you need a chest examination or breathing test; and which changes should prompt urgent review.
