What should you know about rat seizure?

A seizure may cause staring, loss of awareness, stiffening, rhythmic jerking, unusual movements, temporary unresponsiveness, or a sudden collapse. Afterwards, the person may be confused, sleepy, have a headache, or remember little of the event. Causes include low blood sugar, alcohol withdrawal, infection affecting the brain, head injury, stroke, and epilepsy; one seizure does not establish the cause.

Details help clinicians: note what happened before it began, which body parts moved, breathing or colour changes, injuries, recovery, and any medicines or substances involved.

Move nearby hard or sharp objects away, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and place the person on their side when the jerking stops if breathing normally. Stay with them and time the seizure. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth, give food or drink, or attempt mouth-to-mouth during the movements.

Call emergency services if the seizure lasts longer than expected, repeats without recovery, happens in water, causes serious injury, affects breathing, occurs during pregnancy, or is the person’s first known seizure. Urgent assessment is needed with fever and stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, or suspected low blood sugar or alcohol withdrawal.
