What should you know about a raspy barking cough?

A barking quality can occur when the voice box or windpipe is inflamed. Viral illness, including a common cold, may trigger it, especially in children. Mucus dripping from the nose, asthma, reflux, or airway irritation can also change the cough's sound. Bronchiolitis is another possible cause in young children. The sound alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the cough began suddenly, is worse at night, comes with a hoarse voice, or is accompanied by noisy breathing, fever, wheezing, or reduced activity. These details help a clinician judge the airway and the wider illness.

Keep the person upright and calm, because distress can make noisy breathing harder. Offer frequent fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and other irritants. Do not give a child an over-the-counter cough medicine unless a healthcare professional advises it. A clinician may assess the throat, breathing pattern, oxygen level, and hydration before recommending treatment.

Seek emergency help for struggling or very fast breathing, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe drowsiness, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or a child who cannot speak or cry normally because of breathlessness. Arrange prompt medical review if noisy breathing occurs while resting, symptoms are worsening, or the cough follows choking. A cough that persists or repeatedly returns also deserves assessment.

Ask what part of the airway seems irritated, whether the breathing noise is present at rest, which treatments are appropriate for the person's age, and what changes should trigger urgent help. Mention medicines already given, allergies, fever, and any choking episode.
