Rashes, headache and fever: what they may mean

A viral illness may cause fever, headache, tiredness, cough, sore throat, or a widespread rash. Dengue can present with fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, and rash, especially after travel or mosquito exposure. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can intensify headache and weakness, while sinus or cold symptoms may point toward an upper-airway illness. The rash may be flat, raised, itchy, painful, bruised-looking, or non-blanching; those details, along with timing, help a clinician decide what to do.

Rest in a cool place, sip fluids if you can, and record temperature, medicines, travel, insect exposure, and when each symptom began. Avoid close contact with vulnerable people until an infectious illness has been considered. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen for an unexplained fever and rash without professional advice, particularly after travel. Arrange same-day medical advice if the fever persists, the headache is strong or unusual, the rash is spreading, or you are becoming dehydrated.

Seek emergency help for a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, severe or sudden headache, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, seizure, extreme sleepiness, or a purple rash that does not fade when pressed. Get urgent assessment for severe abdominal pain, bleeding, easy bruising, inability to drink, or very little urine. These warning signs matter regardless of the suspected cause.

Tell your doctor when the fever and rash started, whether the spots fade under pressure, and any travel, heat, insect, medicine, or sick-contact history. Ask whether you need examination or tests and which warning signs require emergency care.
