Rashes after dengue: what to know

Dengue can cause a blotchy or flushed rash during the illness or recovery. It may be more noticeable as fever improves and can change over several days. A rash alone cannot show whether dengue is mild or becoming more serious. Pay attention to abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, restlessness, difficulty breathing, bleeding from the nose or gums, or easy bruising. A new rash may also have an unrelated cause, such as a medicine reaction or another infection, so describe its timing clearly.

Rest, drink fluids as advised, and keep a simple record of temperature, urine, rash changes, and other symptoms. Avoid scratching and protect irritated skin from heat and strong sun. Do not start aspirin or ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically tells you to; ask what pain relief is appropriate. Keep follow-up appointments and mention any new medicine, pregnancy, long-term illness, or bleeding symptom. A GP consultation can help assess recovery when the rash is persistent or changing.

Seek urgent care for severe belly pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, black stools, marked weakness, confusion, fainting, cold or clammy skin, or trouble breathing. Get prompt advice if the rash is rapidly worsening, painful, blistered, or accompanied by easy bruising. Do not wait for fever to return before seeking help; serious dengue symptoms can appear as fever settles.
