Understanding trichomoniasis testing
Trichomoniasis is an infection passed through sexual contact. It may cause vaginal discharge, itching, irritation, discomfort when urinating or pain during sex, although some people have no symptoms. A rapid test may use a vaginal swab or another sample, depending on the service. A positive result supports treatment, while a negative result may not explain symptoms or exclude other causes of discharge and itching. Testing does not by itself identify when infection began.
What to do after testing
Follow the clinician’s instructions about treatment and avoid sexual contact until you know what is advised. Partners may need assessment and treatment to reduce reinfection. Do not share medicine or assume that treatment for one infection covers others. Ask whether testing for additional sexually transmitted infections is appropriate, and complete any prescribed course as directed.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt care for pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, sores, bleeding after sex, or feeling very unwell. Seek urgent help for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or symptoms during pregnancy. Return for review if discharge, itching or discomfort persists after treatment.
