Short answer

Random seizures can result from temporary body changes, alcohol withdrawal, infection, medicines, or an underlying neurological condition, so medical assessment is needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a random seizure may mean

A seizure is a burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It may cause staring, loss of awareness, unusual movements, stiffening, shaking, or confusion afterwards. A first seizure does not by itself confirm epilepsy. Possible triggers include low blood sugar, a high fever, sleep deprivation, head injury, medication effects, or withdrawal after regular heavy alcohol use. An infection affecting the brain or its coverings, such as Meningitis, needs urgent attention. Alcohol Use Disorder can be relevant when withdrawal is a concern, while Hypoglycaemia can cause a seizure when blood glucose falls too low.

What to do after an unexpected seizure

Protect the person from injury by moving nearby objects away and cushioning the head. Do not restrain their movements, put anything in their mouth, or give food and drink until they are fully alert. Turn them onto their side after the movements stop and observe their breathing. Record what happened, how long it lasted, possible triggers, and how recovery progressed. Arrange prompt medical assessment, especially after a first seizure; a clinician may review medicines, blood sugar, alcohol use, recent illness, injuries, and the event description.

When urgent help is needed

Call emergency services if the seizure continues beyond five minutes, repeats without full recovery, causes a serious injury, happens in water, or the person has trouble breathing afterwards. Seek urgent help for a first seizure, pregnancy, diabetes, a high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, new weakness, or marked confusion. Stay with the person and note the start time while help is arranged.

Questions for your doctor

Could a medicine, alcohol withdrawal, low blood sugar, infection, or sleep loss have contributed? What tests or specialist assessment are appropriate? What safety precautions should I follow until the cause is clearer?

Questions people ask

Does one random seizure mean epilepsy?

Not necessarily. Epilepsy is diagnosed using the overall history, examination, and test results rather than one event alone.

What information helps a clinician?

A witness account, timing, movements, awareness, breathing, recovery, recent illness, medicines, sleep, alcohol use, and possible injury can all help.
