Short answer

Random cold chills may reflect temperature changes, fever, stress, or infection, and chills with serious or rapidly worsening symptoms need urgent medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What chills may mean

Shivering is the body’s way of generating heat, but chills can happen before, during, or without a measured fever. Influenza, pneumonia, and other infections may bring chills with cough, aches, fever, or breathlessness. A Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection can cause chills with burning urine, urgency, back pain, or fever. Travel and insect exposure matter because Malaria and Dengue Fever can cause feverish episodes and body symptoms. Sepsis is a dangerous response to infection and may involve chills with confusion, fast breathing, severe weakness, or feeling suddenly very unwell.

What to do during chills

Check your temperature if possible and write down when the episode starts, how long it lasts, and what symptoms accompany it. Move to a comfortable environment, use light layers, rest, and drink fluids if you can. Follow the label or your clinician’s advice for fever relief, considering allergies, pregnancy, kidney disease, and other medicines. Do not delay assessment by repeatedly masking a worsening illness.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for confusion, difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, a seizure, severe weakness, or inability to stay awake. Seek urgent care for chills with a stiff neck, severe headache, chest pain, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal or back pain, or a rapidly spreading rash. Get prompt medical advice after travel to a malaria-risk region or when chills recur with fever.

Questions for your doctor

Could an infection explain my chills and accompanying symptoms? Do I need urine, blood, or chest assessment? Does recent travel change the tests needed? How should I monitor temperature and recognise deterioration?
