What should you know about random cloudy urine?

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, contains cells or mucus, or has crystals that form as its chemistry changes. Dehydration may also make urine darker and stronger smelling. A Urinary Tract Infection can present with cloudy urine, burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. A Kidney Infection can cause urinary symptoms with fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. Vaginal or genital discharge can mix with a sample and change its appearance, so the collection method matters.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the change clears. Note burning, urgency, frequency, pain, fever, blood, smell, discharge, and how long the cloudiness lasts. Do not take leftover antibiotics; the right treatment depends on the cause and a urine sample may be needed. Use a clean sample container and follow collection instructions if testing is arranged.

Seek urgent assessment for cloudy urine with fever and flank pain, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or very little urine. Get prompt advice if you see blood, are pregnant, have a urinary catheter, or have a condition affecting kidney function.
