Raised Ring on Skin: What to Know

A ring with a scaly advancing edge may need assessment for an inflammatory or infectious process. Contact Dermatitis can form shapes that match an exposure, while Heat Rash tends to occur in warm, sweaty areas. Psoriasis may produce well-defined, scaly plaques. Rosacea usually affects the central face, and Sunburn follows recent ultraviolet exposure. Cellulitis more often causes a warm, painful, spreading area than a neat ring.

Record whether the centre is clear, darker, blistered, or normal, and whether the border is itchy, painful, or enlarging. Similar-looking rashes can require different treatments.

Clean gently and keep the area dry. Avoid steroid creams, bleaching products, harsh exfoliants, and sharing towels unless a clinician has advised them.
