What should you know about radiosurgery brain metastases?

Brain metastases are cancer deposits that have spread to the brain from another part of the body. They may occur with breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, or other cancers. Symptoms can include headache, seizure, weakness, balance difficulty, speech changes, or confusion, although some deposits are found during imaging before symptoms appear. Radiosurgery can target a defined lesion; whole-brain radiotherapy or surgery may be considered in other circumstances.

Radiation effects can develop during treatment or later. Swelling around a lesion may cause symptoms, and medicines such as steroids may be prescribed when clinically needed.

Tell the team about previous radiation, implanted devices, medicines, allergies, and any possibility of pregnancy. Ask how to take steroids or anti-seizure medicine on the treatment day. Arrange transport if you may feel tired or receive a sedating medicine. After treatment, follow instructions about activity, wound care if a frame was used, and follow-up scans. Keep oncology appointments because brain-directed treatment is usually considered alongside treatment for cancer elsewhere in the body.

Seek urgent help for a seizure, sudden weakness, new speech or vision difficulty, severe or rapidly worsening headache, repeated vomiting, increasing sleepiness, or confusion. Contact the treatment team promptly for fever, worsening swelling or pain at a frame site, or a new neurological change. Do not adjust steroid doses without medical guidance.
