Cervical radiculopathy: what to know

Nerve roots leave the spinal canal through openings between the neck bones. A disc bulge or herniated disc, age-related narrowing such as Cervical Spondylosis, or inflammation can irritate a root. Symptoms may travel from the neck into the shoulder, arm, or hand in a strip-like pattern. Neck movement may change the symptoms. Arm Numbness and Tingling, Hand Numbness, Muscle Weakness, Neck Pain, or Shoulder Pain can occur, but each symptom also has other possible causes.

Keep gently active within comfortable limits and change positions rather than holding the neck still for long periods. Avoid heavy lifting or repeated neck positions that clearly intensify arm symptoms. A clinician can test reflexes, sensation, strength, and neck movement, then discuss pain relief, targeted physiotherapy, or further assessment. Do not begin forceful traction or strenuous neck exercises without guidance.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly worsening weakness, loss of hand function, trouble walking, poor coordination, or new bladder or bowel control problems. Emergency help is needed for sudden one-sided weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, or severe symptoms after major trauma. Arrange a review when pain, numbness, or tingling persists or keeps returning.
