Radiation for liver metastases: what to know

Liver metastases are cancer deposits that started elsewhere, such as bowel or pancreatic cancer. Radiation may be delivered from outside the body or through a focused technique that concentrates energy on selected deposits. Scans map the targets while helping the team protect healthy liver and nearby organs.

Radiation may be used to control a liver area, reduce symptoms or support a broader treatment plan. Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, abdominal discomfort and changes in liver function. The risks depend on the treatment field and your existing liver health.

Bring information about the original cancer, previous treatments, liver problems, alcohol use and medicines or supplements. Ask whether liver resection, tumour ablation, chemotherapy or another approach is suitable. The choice can depend on the position of the deposits, blood tests and whether cancer is present elsewhere.

Report worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, unusual sleepiness, fever or confusion.
