Rabies without a bite: what to know

A bite is the clearest exposure, but it is not the only route. Scratches can matter when saliva contaminates them. Touching an animal, its fur, or an intact area of skin does not by itself create the same exposure pathway. Rabies affects the nervous system, so a possible exposure deserves prompt assessment even when the wound is tiny, hidden, or absent.

Wash any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and running water. If saliva may have entered the eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse with clean water. Do not wait for symptoms before getting medical advice. Tell the clinician what animal was involved, whether saliva was present, where contact occurred, and when it happened. Assessment may lead to rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, which can include wound care, vaccine, and other treatment depending on the exposure.

Seek urgent medical care today after contact with a suspected or confirmed rabid animal, saliva on broken skin, or saliva in the eyes or mouth. Go immediately for new confusion, trouble swallowing, unusual agitation, weakness, or breathing difficulty. These symptoms are emergencies and should not be managed at home.

Ask whether the contact counts as an exposure, whether vaccination is needed, and which follow-up doses or wound checks apply. Bring the animal description and the exact time and place of contact if available.
