What should you know about a rabies rash?

Rabies is assessed mainly by the exposure, not by a skin rash. A bite, scratch, or infected saliva entering broken skin, the eye, nose, or mouth can create a concern even when the skin looks normal. Conversely, a rash has many possible causes and does not by itself show that rabies is present.

Early symptoms of rabies can be nonspecific, and symptoms are not a safe way to decide whether prevention is needed. If there was contact with a mammal that could carry rabies, explain the event to a clinician promptly rather than monitoring the rash at home.

If a possible exposure occurred, wash the wound or affected skin with soap and running water. Rinse eyes or the mouth with clean water if saliva may have reached them. Photographing a rash may help a clinician see how it changes, but do not delay exposure advice while waiting for the skin to settle. Avoid applying irritating products to an open wound.

Seek urgent medical advice after a bite or scratch, or after saliva contacts broken skin or a mucous membrane, whether or not a rash is present. Get immediate help for confusion, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulty, severe weakness, or rapidly worsening illness. Do not wait for a rash to appear before asking about rabies post-exposure prophylaxis.

Tell your doctor when the rash began, what it feels like, and which medicines or products touched the skin. Also describe the animal, type of contact, wound location, and timing. Ask whether the rash needs separate treatment and whether the exposure requires rabies prevention.
