Rabies patient: what to know after exposure

Being worried about rabies does not establish a diagnosis. Clinicians assess the animal, the contact, whether saliva reached broken skin or a mucous membrane, the wound location, and your vaccination history. A person may feel well after an exposure and still need preventive care. Keep any treatment records and tell the clinician about previous rabies vaccination.

Rinse and wash the area with soap and running water immediately. Remove contaminated clothing if needed and avoid handling the animal again. Contact urgent medical care with the time, place, animal description, and details of any bite, scratch, or saliva contact. Follow the recommended vaccine schedule and return for planned doses rather than stopping when the wound looks better.

Seek urgent assessment for every credible rabies exposure, including a small wound. Go to emergency care for deep or heavily bleeding injuries, exposure of the eyes or mouth, facial or neck wounds, or infection signs such as fever, spreading redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain. Confusion, difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, or new weakness require emergency help.
