Rabies-infected dog: what to know

An infected dog may show a marked behaviour change, unusual aggression or fear, confusion, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, a changed bark, weakness, or paralysis. Some dogs become unusually quiet rather than agitated. These signs overlap with other problems, so only the appropriate veterinary and public-health process can assess the risk.

Rabies is transmitted through infected saliva. A bite, scratch contaminated with saliva, or saliva entering broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth can expose a person.

Do not approach, punish, feed, muzzle, or try to transport a dog that is behaving strangely. Move people and pets away, close a door or barrier if you can do so without contact, and call a veterinarian, animal-control service, or public-health authority.
