Behaviour that can raise concern

A racoon with rabies may act unusually aggressive, confused, fearless, or active during daylight. It may stagger, vocalise unusually, drool, have trouble swallowing, or become weak and paralysed. These behaviours can have other causes, so do not attempt to identify rabies by getting closer.

Human infection is linked to infected saliva entering broken skin or the eyes, mouth, or nose. A racoon being seen nearby, or contact with an intact surface, does not by itself establish an exposure.

What to do if a racoon is acting strangely

Bring people and pets indoors and keep away from the animal, its saliva, and any object it may have bitten. Do not feed, corner, trap, move, or handle it. Contact local wildlife control or public-health authorities for safe instructions.

After a bite, scratch, or possible saliva contact, wash the area with soap and running water. Seek prompt medical assessment and review [Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis](/treatments/acute-and-urgent-care/rabies-post-exposure-prophylaxis/) with a clinician.

When to seek urgent medical care

Get urgent care after any racoon bite or scratch, or if saliva reached broken skin, the eyes, nose, or mouth. Give the clinician the time and place of contact and describe the animal without trying to capture it. Care should not wait for the animal to be found.
