Rabies: description and key facts

The virus is carried by infected mammals and can enter through a bite, scratch, or saliva contacting broken skin, the eyes, nose, or mouth. Early illness may resemble a general infection, with fever, headache, weakness, or discomfort around the exposure site. Later disease can affect swallowing, behaviour, movement, and breathing. An animal’s appearance alone cannot reliably rule out risk.

Clean any bite or scratch straight away using soap and running water. Seek urgent medical assessment, even if the wound looks small or the animal has disappeared. Tell the clinician where and when the exposure happened, what animal was involved, and whether saliva touched your face or an existing wound. Treatment after exposure can prevent the virus from causing illness.

Get urgent advice after contact with a bat or another unfamiliar, sick, aggressive, or unavailable mammal. Seek emergency help for confusion, severe agitation, difficulty swallowing, new weakness, or breathing problems after a possible exposure. Do not wait for a symptom checklist to become complete before discussing preventive care.

Ask whether you need rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, how the wound should be followed, and whether vaccination is useful for future work, travel, or animal contact.
