What the illness can look like
The interval after exposure varies. Early features can include fever, headache, tiredness, nausea, or pain, itching, or tingling near a healed wound. As the infection affects the brain and nerves, a person may develop anxiety, confusion, agitation, difficulty swallowing, sensitivity to air or water, weakness, or paralysis. These signs are not specific to rabies, but a possible animal exposure changes the urgency of assessment.
What to do after an exposure
If a mammal has bitten or scratched you, wash the site thoroughly with soap and running water and seek urgent medical advice. Give the clinician the animal details and your vaccination history. Preventive treatment works before illness develops and may involve a rabies vaccine series, with additional antibody treatment for some exposures. Avoid handling the animal again while waiting for advice.
When care is urgent
Contact emergency or urgent care immediately after a high-risk bite, scratch, or saliva contact with an open wound or mucous membrane. If neurological symptoms occur after a possible exposure, do not travel alone or delay evaluation. The animal may need assessment by public-health or veterinary authorities, but your medical review should not wait for that process.
