What should you know about rabbit seizure?

A seizure may involve stiffening, rhythmic jerking, staring, unusual movements, altered awareness, or a period of confusion afterward. A first seizure needs medical assessment because possible triggers include low blood sugar, alcohol withdrawal, infection, head injury, medication effects, or epilepsy. A seizure does not by itself identify one cause.

Move nearby hard or sharp objects away, cushion the head, loosen tight clothing around the neck, and turn the person onto their side when practical. Stay with them and note the start and end time. Do not restrain them, put anything in their mouth, give food or drink during the episode, or try to force open the jaw. Afterward, speak calmly and allow recovery.

If safe, note what happened before the event, the movements, breathing changes, injuries, and how alert the person became afterward. This information helps the clinician.

Call emergency services if the seizure is prolonged, repeats without recovery, causes breathing difficulty, happens in water, follows a significant injury, occurs during pregnancy, or affects someone with diabetes. Get urgent assessment for a first seizure, a fever with stiff neck or severe headache, persistent confusion, or an injury sustained during the episode.

Ask what may have triggered the event, whether blood sugar or infection needs checking, whether driving or swimming restrictions apply, and what seizure action plan your household should follow.
